Before we go any further, I want to make sure we both agree on the final all-in price upfront, so we don’t end up with surprises or extra charges later, for either of us.
Just to make sure we’re on the same page:
I have a basement renovation project (Home Office, Living/Theater, Bathroom, Mechanical Room) and I need a professional lighting plan that balances high-end aesthetics with installation efficiency.
I’m looking for a professional who can take my raw floor plan, clean it up, and deliver a “no-regrets” lighting strategy for years to come with Dialux, AutoCad, and more if needed or required.
1) Critical Constraints (Must Read)
Location: Quebec, Canada — all standards must be North American (120V).
Units: Imperial system only (feet & inches).
Procurement strategy: Please do not specify expensive European or proprietary brands. I will buy fixtures from Amazon Canada or Home Depot.
Your job: Define the strict technical specs (lumens, Kelvin/color temperature, CRI, beam angle, cut-out size). Most importantly, include the WHY behind every choice (ex: why 3000K here vs 4000K there, why this beam angle, why this placement). I want to understand the logic behind every decision.
My job: Based on your specs, I’ll find the best matching products available locally (Amazon/Home Depot) at the best price, and confirm them with you before you finalize the plan.
2) Design Philosophy & Budget
Goal: A customized, architectural look based on my furniture layout (attached).
Layered lighting (3 key goals): The plan must include the three essential layers of lighting:
1. General/Ambient lighting (overall comfort and atmosphere)
2. Task lighting (focused functional light for work areas)
3. Accent lighting (decorative/high-end architectural highlights)
Please show how each room uses these layers, and which fixtures/zones are dedicated to each one.
Modern installation pattern (important): I don’t want a generic grid unless it truly makes sense. Please design a modern, up-to-date recessed lighting pattern that fits the space and furniture layout: symmetrical where structure demands it, intentionally asymmetrical where it looks better, and staggered/offset (dephased) rows when appropriate. Use targeted placement and align key lights with architectural lines and focal points (desk/work area, TV/fireplace, sofa, circulation paths), so the result feels custom, intentional, and architectural — not standard “builder grade.”
Avoid overkill: I want to avoid the “Swiss cheese” effect (too many recessed lights).
Cost efficiency: Please be mindful of installation costs. More lights = more wiring and labor. I want maximum visual impact with the optimal number of fixtures and circuits: no dead spots, but no waste.
Energy efficiency (important): I want an energy-efficient design that uses smart dimming + smart zoning to reduce consumption, while still providing excellent light quality whenever full output is needed.
3) Technical Requirements
Smart zoning: I use home automation. I need independent zones/dimmers to create scenes (ex: “Movie Night”, “Work”, “Relax”).
Zoning must also match the 3 layers: separate circuits/dimmers by ambient vs task vs accent wherever it makes sense, so scenes are both beautiful and energy-efficient.
Switch logic: I need the exact physical placement of switches. Please advise the best layout for a clean look (side-by-side vs stacked, etc.).
Wall sconces: I already have sconces, but I need your expert advice on their exact positioning (height + spacing) relative to the walls and layout.
4) Scope of Work & Deliverables
Step 1 — CAD cleanup:
I’ll provide a rough plan + measurements. You will redraw/clean up the plan (including the bearing wall and bathroom walls).
Step 2 — Design package:
3D renders to visualize the ambiance
2D lighting layout plan (PDF) with precise measurements for the electrician
Photometric Results and report reflecting average lux levels at different points.
IES file development for lighting
Source files (mandatory): I require the .EVO (Dialux) and .DWG (AutoCAD) files (and any other necessary source files) for my archives and future reference
Spec sheet + rationale: The technical guide for my purchases, including the reasoning for the selected Kelvin temperatures and beam angles

(If needed, I can also provide wall measurements, photos of the space, future furniture placement, or anything else you need to do the job right. Please don’t hesitate to ask, I’m here to work with you so we can deliver the best plan for my needs.)
I want to get this right the first time. Please let me know. Looking for the best offer, at the best price, needed asap.
Thank you
